The Food Service Manager is responsible for the financial and program management, supervision, and daily operation of the local school nutrition program

Essential Duties

  • Manages the School Nutrition Program in compliance with all federal, state, local and FCBOE policies and procedures
  • Implements and adheres to Classified Employee Work Rules and School Nutrition Personnel and Uniform Standards
  • Maintains food cost control through planning, forecasting, ordering and receiving
  • Manages a financially sound school nutrition program including organization, delegation, and supervision of personnel
  • Ensures sanitation and safety procedures are followed at all times
  • Supervises all SNP Employees in assigned program and assists in selection; Trains and evaluates employees in all aspects of the school nutrition program including proper methods of food, preparation, serving, storage and sanitation
  • Prepares a daily work schedule and cleaning schedule for all SNP employees including amounts of food to prepare, and records and task to complete
  • Maintains food safety and sanitation procedures including employee cleanliness and food handling, receiving, storage, and preparation and cooling; Monitors temperature records of refrigerated equipment, freezers and dry food storage areas
  • Collects, counts and deposits all school nutrition program monies on a daily basis
  • Manages the use and care of small and large equipment
  • Maintains ServSafe Certification
  • Promotes school nutrition and exhibits good public relations
  • Communicates effectively and professionally with customers, staff and administrators and works with them in a tactful, considerate, and cooperative manner
  • Makes decisions in critical situations
  • Follows instructions both verbal and written
  • Follows instructions for chemical use in the operation of the program
  • Reports all accidents and monitors employee health so that the public may be protected against disease
  • Completes, files and retains all records relating to the school nutrition operation to include breakfast, lunch, snacks production, cash sheets, inventories, purchasing and invoice records, employee records and time sheets, monthly summary reports, and all other reports required
  • Improves job related skills and take pride in serving all students
  • Completes all required training including,  but not limited to Training In Depth, 12 hours In-Service annually, and 30 hour Orientation for Nutrition Employees
  • Creates an atmosphere in the cafeteria, which results in high percentage of student and adult participation
  • Supports activities that complement the total educational process of the school
  • Promotes the School Nutrition Program healthy eating habits and foster good public relations
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the appropriate administrator

Required Education

High School Diploma or GED equivalent


National Restaurant ServSafe Certified
State Department of Education Training Requirement to be completed within 5 years of hire date

Experience Qualifications

Minimum of 3 years of food service and/or management experience required; institutional food manager experience preferred


  • Must be able to make decisions in critical situations
  • Knowledge of established food service standards and practices and federal, state, and local regulations as related to the school nutrition program
  • Ability to follow instructions both verbal and written
  • Ability to plan and supervise food preparation based on sound principals of nutrition, customer acceptability and cost control
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to maintain food cost control through planning and purchasing
  • Ability to manage a school nutrition program including organization, delegation, and supervision of personnel in regards to food service
  • Must be able to collaborate effectively with District and school personnel, the general public, and work with diverse groups of people
  • Ability to organize and maintain records as required by federal, state, and local regulations

    Physical Demands

    • Lift and carry a minimum of 50 lbs
    • Lift with the use of a ladder in high places
    • Lift heavy items from a stooping position
    • Work with hands in hot water and chemicals approved for use in the School Nutrition Program operation
