Summary

The School Safety Specialist II is responsible for providing day-to-day oversight and performing a wide range of professional work in any one of a variety of specialized areas within Safety and Security and Risk Management. The incumbent in this position provides advice and assistance to District Leadership and other staff regarding information pertaining to Safety and Security. The incumbent in this position will also assess and address the safety and integrity of facilities, security, culture and climate of schools to ensure a safe and healthy learning environment and provide follow up, reporting, and development of continuous improvement plan for all District facilities. The School Safety Specialist may have some supervisory responsibility of a clerical position.

Essential Duties

  • Monitors, interprets, and implements current laws, rules, and policies pertaining to Safety, Security and Risk Management
  • Works directly with District Leadership across multiple functions
  • Guides the initiation and completion of complex projects and programs; Makes recommendations to management for implementation
  • Researches and recommends new processes, policies, and procedures to effect continual improvements in the efficiency of the department and services performed
  • Undertakes projects as assigned by Safety and Security Leadership staff to support organizational initiatives
  • Develops and conducts presentations/trainings for other departmental leadership and staff relevant to Safety, Security and Risk Management
  • Receives and responds either verbally or in writing to inquiries from employees, departmental leadership, and other staff
  • Establishes and maintains files and documents as required by State and Federal Laws, State Department of Education Rules and Regulations, and Fulton County Board of Education Policies, where applicable
  • Generates reports for Executive Staff as required
  • Develops Local School based and District wide Emergency Preparedness plans based on 4 phases of emergency management: Mitigation, Preparedness, Response and Recovery
  • Develops Hazard mitigation plan and Threat Assessment for all FCS Facilities; Guides and supports school to Implementation of the plan
  • Assesses Facilities and Site Access Control including, but not limited to all inside and outside areas, Emergency Communications, Power, Fuel and Water, Security and Surveillance Systems, Fire Alarm and Control Systems, Electrical and Mechanical Systems
  • Serves as a member of cross-functional committees
  • Collaborates with local responders to promote effective communications and cooperation
  • Attends trainings/conferences to keep abreast of current laws, trends, and best practices
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the appropriate administrator

Required Education

High School Diploma or GED equivalent

Certification/Licensure

None required
HazMat Qualification/Certification preferred
Must be willing to acquire additional training as directed by manager

Experience Qualifications

Minimum 3 years of experience working in a related field required; Experience with FEMA/GEMA training preferred; Fire Academy Graduate preferred

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Should have comprehensive emergency response background including fire or law enforcement
  • Knowledge of laws, trends, and best practices relevant to assigned area of responsibility
  • Must be able to work with minimal supervision
  • Must be able to successfully manage multiple tasks, projects and responsibilities
  • Ability to apply critical thinking skills in rendering solutions to various issues
  • Must be able to collaborate effectively with District and school personnel, the general public, and work with diverse groups of people
  • Proven ability to handle confidential information
  • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal

Working Conditions

  • Functions in the field performing assessment at least 50% of the time; Involves indoor/outdoor
  • Normal office environment

Physical Demands

  • Must be capable of lifting objects up to 50 lbs
  • Must be capable of climbing ladders
  • Routine physical activity associated with normal office environment
